Week 10: The Mock Conference

How you want to organize the mock conference is up to you, and the training and resources you will receive will be more than plenty to allow you to put together a fun and successful mock conference. The following suggestions are only small bits of advice you may want to consider when planning for intermediate level classes:

• Take a class or two to do a practice run before the real mock conference.

• Prepare topics for discussion for the moderated caucus in case debate turns stale.

• Print debate vocabulary and descriptions of procedure for students.

• Keep your plans flexible and adaptable. Every group of students is different, so you will have to read them throughout the day in order to keep the conference running smoothly.

Every GC language assistant will tell you how much work it is to prepare a mock conference, but how rewarding it is in the end to see your kids debating important matters in the world, let alone in a second language, and enjoying themselves while doing so -- it's truly amazing. So best of luck, and remember to enjoy the process!
